Event Details

BOBFEST is an annual city-wide celebration of the music, teachings and legacy of Bob Marley. This year’s theme is AGAIN “L’Union Fait La Force” a Haitian term and the motto of the republic of Haiti, which translates to “Unity Yields Strength.” In celebration of the birth day of Bob Marley, we have organized a weeklong series of events (Feb 1-6, 2012) which will provide a celebration of his legacy and a demonstration of the current relevance of his message. Each day’s title within this celebration is modeled after a song of Bob Marley.

THURSDAY FEB 2nd: PASSIN IT ON @ SHOMREY HaTora CULTURAL CENTER
Part of the undeniable legacy of Bob Marley is the perpetual relevance of his profound and often seemingly prophetic social message. His music has literally been, in many countries, the "soundtrack to the revolution." He represents the essence of true art, something that inspires real, tangible change in the lives of those who digest the art. Bob Fest proudly links with the FTP Movement, a grassroots organization which has been at the practical forefront for social change, to present a film screening and discussion: PASSIN' IT ON - The Black Panthers' Search for Justice. "A gritty and soulful classic, PASSIN' IT ON is the story of one man in search of justice who is wronged by the nation with which he is at odds. Part indictment, part redemption tale, the film offers startling insight into the role of the Black Panther Party in a social revolution, and the New York Police Department and the FBI's devious targeting of one of the organization's most fervent leaders--Dhoruba Bin Wahad (born Richard Moore). Emerging from the Bronx ghettoes and a life of petty crime, Dhoruba dived head first into the Black Power movement, serving breakfast to school children with one hand while wielding a gun with the other. Amid a national and FBI-led appression against the Panthers, Dhoruba was framed on the flimsy evidence of the wounding and grotesque disfigurement of two police officers and sent to prison. After trials and mistrials, incarceration and eventually acquittal 19 years later, a still-impassioned Dhoruba, his attorneys, and other Panthers finally tell his incredible tale of race, revolution and redemption. "A visually compelling film that speaks of a movement, not only a man" (MPR), PASSIN' IT ON bristles with poetry and the exhilerating recollections of a true American political prisoner. "

FRIDAY, FEB 3rd: (1)NE DROP @ THE WEST END PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Africana Studies scholar Yaba Blay Ph.D. and award winning photographer Noelle Theard have launched their collaborative project, (1)ne Drop, a thought provoking look into the "other" faces of Blackness. Using the historical "one-drop rule" as a reference, Blay and Theard's project seeks to challenge the narrow, yet popular perceptions of "Blackness" through one on one conversations, essays and the personal insights of those the world over, who may not be immediately recognized, accepted or embraced as Black in our visual, racialized society. Their stories about racial identity, their connection to "Blackness" and their experiences with skin color politics juxtaposed to their vivid, personal portraits (in a photo book essay format) is just one portion of this robust, multi-tiered media campaign, which will also include intimate videos of their journeys via the www.1nedrop.com website .  This evening of cultural sharing will include a few musical selections intertwined with a vivid presentation and discussion to follow, This is an event for the entire family, and promises to be the springboard for much greater dialogue and healing.

FRIDAY, FEB 3rd: ONE FOUNDATION @ OMENALA GRIOT AFRICAN MUSEM

HABESHA inc, www.habeshainc.org, is a non profit organization which has built a solid international reputation based on quality education to adults and youth alike in the fields of sustainable culture. HABESHA produced a celebrated documentary, BLACK TO OUR ROOTS (featured nationally on PBS), which documented the yearly program (now operating in several cities) which culminates in a life changing journey to Africa for the youthful participants. Locally, HABESHA is responsible for a number of seminal annual social activities, including the ever popular Organic Garden Fest. On this night, in a familly friendly atmosphere with optional childcare services, we team up with HABESHA for an original dancehall vibration...the way things used to be.  The notion of adults having to party separate from children is strange to us in the African experience.  Food, music, vendors,  fellowship...LOVE. SUNDAY, FEB 5TH: ZION TRAIN @ TASSILI'S RAW REALITY

“L’Union Fait La Force.” Over 200 years ago, a united and determined group of our ancestors used this affirmation as a rallying cry to overthrow the most powerful army on the planet at that time.  Ironically, the devastated state of current Haiti bears testimony to this power.  People don’t bother the forces that they don’t fear. We are in a time of harvest, a ripe time for the manifestation of the prayers of our ancestors. More than anything else, what is needed is Operational Unity. As a wise elder once asked, “what difference do our differences make???” On Sunday, Feb 5th,  we continue the celebration with a POW WOW., an all faiths event of great magnitude, featuring expressions, prayers, chants and love energy from around the African experience. To quote H.I.M Haile Selassie, Bob Marley’s chief influence in his life works, “when African righteous people come together, the WORLD will come together. This is our divine destiny…
